First of all, both BETA programmes have advantages and disadvantages.
On one hand it is easier to find the steps towards the Yahoo version (you go on the Download page, there’s a link “Join now” and then you wait to be accepted in the programme). This is different for MSN. You go to the download page… you download the BETA Live version, and that’s it you say. It isn’t. There’s a link on http://ideas.live.com that says “Try it” - this is the link that will register you in the BETA programme.
On the other hand, when adding contacts, in Live… you just write down the Yahoo email address and that’s it. In Yahoo, you must also select the type of service (LCS / Live / Yahoo). This is because a Yahoo Buddy is tied to his Yahoo email address, so the Microsoft guys are only searching for “@yahoo.com” and they now that you want to add a Yahoo Buddy to your Live Messenger, but… what shall the Yahoo guys do? They also search for “@hotmail.com” or “@msn.com” but the Live/MSN Messenger is tied to a .NET Passport (now called Live ID) which doesn’t have to be tied to a Hotmail email address.
All in all, in works. Hopefully, in the future they will unify the voice system as well, and kick ass, regarding Skype. Until then… Yahoo rules, MSN follows and Skype voice-talks!
