HP QuickPlay & QP Direct 2.3 Re-install

For some time now I haven’t had this running, and now with a needed formatting of my hard-drive I wanted to have everything fixed.

My situation is like this - 1 HDD with 1 partition for the OS, another one for “my stuff” and another one for QuickPlay!

So, first of all, you must know that QP and QP Direct installing software are a bit dumm.

In order to install QP 2.3 fully I had to do it in safe mode.

You should do the same, but before that you should search for an update (at this moment there’s a v3409 patch). So, enter safe mode - install QP 2.3. and apply the patch.

Now - the QP Direct installing software has a problem detecting where to put the mini-Windows (often given by error -2147418113, in the QuickPlay component). You have to create an empty partition (unformatted) at the end of your first hard drive, but make sure that it is a PRIMARY partition and not a logical one. Norton Partition Magic is perfect for this!!!

So… make sure you have 1GB free, unformatted at the end of your first HDD. Then run QP Direct install. It will ask you to restart in the end.

I don’t know if the same scenario will be yours, but when I rebooted, my system said something about missing system32\hal.dll (don’t piss on yourself!)

Just put your Windows XP/Recovery CD and then go to Recovery console! Just run “fixboot c:” and “bootcfg /rebuild” and add all your Windows partitions. One of them is the newly created partition with QuickPlay Direct on it.

Then restart. Make sure you boot into your QuickPlay Direct mini-Windows. The system should install the basic drivers for the system, and maybe you will get some warnings about not being able to work with the hiberfil file (the hibernation file that it needs to speed up the boot process, but so far you haven’t used QP Direct, and so there’s no hibernation file! — again, very dumm).

You should now have QP Direct up and running!

The system should boot into YOUR windows normally, but start the QP Direct windows when you press the QP logo or DVD shortcut button!

Break a leg… tell me what happens!

hey, im trying to reinstall quickplay, but i cant find the quickplay direct files, would you be able to send them to me or to upload them somewhere? i just need the hpqpdp folder.

thanks

Alright, I followed this, sort of…. remember that you DO NOT want to put the QuickPlay Windows partition into your boot.ini with bootcfg. That will give you a BSOD for sure. But aside from that, this process works to restore QuickPlay button functionality.

hey guys, i re-installed the whole system and lost the quickplay folder. now i am trying to find the quickplay software for windows xp. if anybody can point me to the right direction or let me upload a file i would really appericiate it. thanks

please help me! let me know where i can get this f*cking direct play and quickplay.. that’s my folt but i’v lost all partitions on my hd also recovery(( than i have nothing and i don’t mind where to get this prog… help please!

Alexander. The best thing would be to search on DC++ hubs. Inevitably you will get one version there. Let me know how it goes

Help me please! I have surfed all the net but i still can’t find an answer..
Nobody talks about HPQ troubles. I have installed HPQ yet, but I downloaded the upgrading file for v2.3 and when i run it I receive the error message:”GRAVE. This software can only be installed on authorized machine”. I have an HP Pavilion dv8316ea.
But in the past (before a format session… ;) I already installed that updgrade and there was NO PROBLEM! What kind of error is?
What should I do? Thanks

As much as I want to help you - I have never heard of that. Did you talk to the online support at HP?

Hello Everyone, I did the creation of that 1GB Particion, assigned letter X:, left it unformated, set it Primary.

However, when I try to run setap.exe from HPQPDP folder in C:/SWsetup, it gives me this error message:

“QuickPlaycan only be Installed in QuickPlay-enabled mechine.”

How com is giving this Error Message, can anyone help me with this PLEASE????

I have Compaq Presario 2100 WinXPPro SP2.

Thanx….

Hmm, I don’t think that Presario has a QuickPlay button, but if it does… No idea why the system gives that error!

i tried already to find qiuckplay software at DC++ but i couldnt find one plus i dont really know how to use it.is there any alternative to find it another website??

I don’t think that HP is providing that as a Download somewhere. Sorry.

Hi !
I have windows vista on a brand new HP Pavilion tx1020ea.
I tried this method to create a partition and installed QP direct. All runs ok, but on the last reboot (after qpd installed), it automatically boots on the quickplay direct partition (quickplay button or not), and loads winxp, then it displays a blue screen that invites me to check my hard drive. So, i have no choice but to erase quickplay partition (with a boot on Bootit NG), and reboot vista.
Could you give me more informations about this blue screen ?
I thank you a lot, and I wish you a nice day (or night, I don’t know with the time shift;-))

so anyone could upload the software for anyone here…that would be useful..

You can download Quickplay direct on this web page :
http://www.asifism.com/news-about-this-site-and-me/new-hp-quickplay-keys/

Just need to enter the key displayed below the link to download…

I’ve got an hp dv9500t that came with vista, but I’m going to make the move back to xp.

It’s been a while since I did an xp install, can I create my unformatted quickplay partition during my xp install or do I have to do my xp install, then make the partition with partitionmagic?

(I don’t have partitionmagic and would rather not buy it just for this, so if I need something to perform the same function, is there anything free out there that will do the job?)

I guess no one knows.

grvender, sorry for the late reply.

from what i remember - xp installation doesn’t let you partition your disk from its interface

Thanks… I thought that might be the case.

I don’t have partitionmagic and would rather not buy it just for this - is there anything free out there that will do the job?

try DLing the gparted live cd ISO. burn it to a cd, and boot from it. with some minor adjustments(language, screen resolution, etc) itll boot into a highly scaled down version of linux GUI. itll scan your drives and you can add/remove/move/resize partitions from there

Hi Andrie,
I’m in dire need of help with quickplay installation, am using compaq presario v3141au it came with quickplay buttons. I am using win xp and now want to reinstall it because I’v formatted the system and lost the recovery partition. Please do I need to create the partition of 1028MB or 254MB? I’d be very greatfull if you can briefly hint me on how to succefully recover this functionality.
Wish to c ur reply soon.
thanks

Bashir, let’s see how much I can help.
First of all - quickplay partition needs 1024 MB (1GB) free at the end of your Hard Drive. So, if you have multiple partitions, just shrink the last one, and leave 1GB free.
Be careful - the QP partition needs to be a primary partition, and not a logical one (inside the Extended Partition).

Afterwards, you should just go ahead with installing QP Direct, and it should work flawlessly.

Let me know how it goes!

hi ive got a pavillion dv6189ea which comes with windows xp, so i bought a windowss vista dvd nd instead of chosing the upgrade otion i pressed on the custom which removes everything, nd now when i try to reinstall qp direct it gives me an error saying Quick Playcan only be Installed in QuickPlay-enabled mechine.
P.s i did everything u said, plz reply as soon as possible.

saeed, I don’t know exactly the reason why that message pops up. But from what I can understand Vista has taken control over your HDD and ran a format on it. Therefore bye-bye QuickPlay partition. In that case, you have to re-partition your HDD - Vista has an application for that, if not, just search online for one.
Like I’ve said 2 comments back - free up 1 GB at the end of your main HDD, outside the Extended partition - read more details in my previous comment to this post.

well i did that, i made a partition in the end of my hard disk, labeled x, didnt format, nd marked as primary, but it still give me the error, tried in safe mode, same thing.
plz find me a solution.

well, i wish i’d be the handyman :) but this is like working blind-folded, hand-tied, etc.
from what i hear.. you created a new partition and labeled it.
you should have freed the space, and let it be.
so.. try to delete your newly created partition. if you still get the message.. i really don’t know.

already did delete the partition, didnt format, labeled x, nd this thing never works, safe mode or not, administrator or not.
I NEED HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Andrie,

I must say sorry for the late response, in my struggle to recover hp quickplay I encountered alot of problems that lead me to reinstalling the system over and over. In short, quickplay installation does’nt went right away here I had to use a kind of registry fix because it was initially complaining that “quickplay can only be installed on a quickplay enable machine”, So I got that fix from Notebook forum (In that forum I realise that many people also use the fix before embacking on instalation). After applying that fix everything went successfully, the installer requested me to restart, in the process the machine fails to reboot.

I tried that a couple of times but the problem remain the same. Whenever I restart the machine will not boot again, so I had to delete the quickplay partition and reinstall the C: afresh.

I also downlaoded Quickplay 2.0, I then try installing it, here the installation also required that Registry fix as above, but after completing and restarting, the machine boots normally, however after shutting down I tested the quickplay direct it fails to work, in fact the quickplay buttons don’t even respond or do anything while the machine is off.

I then try updating the quickplay 2.0 installation to quickplay 2.3(that previously fails to boot), the installation was succesful and the machine reboots normally but still the quickplay direct does’nt work(the buttons does’nt function when the machine is off).

I’m just devastated, and am afraid but I cannot understand why my notebook fails to run this quickplay? Remember am using Presario V3141AU on Win XP.

Pls. I need more support now!

waiting for ur response

hi, coul u plz give the link where u found the fix for that error?

I see.. so there’s a fix for that. I actually had not idea that something like that existed.

BUT.. GUYS.. I AM HEREBY PUT IN THE POSITION TO SAY stop!!!
I mean.. it seems like you have transformed your QPD situation in a matter of death and life!
And it is far from being a real one!

So what if you can’t boot your notebook into QuickPlay? What happens if you have DVDs with XVID videos? They don’t play! So.. evnetually you can only press the QP buttons, and then you can play music or DVDs… supposedly in a faster way then just loading up your main Operating System.

But we live in quite a free world now - this means there are quite a lots of options for doing most of the things.
The option/alternative for QuickPlay … http://geexbox.org/en/index.html !!!!
It’s only 8.9 MB ISO.. you can put it on a USB stick, or even install it on your hard drive.
There.. you don’t have WinXP Media Center Boot OS, but a Linux Media Center Boot OS!

You can even try the generator to change the interface, remote control, etc.

If that one doesn’t work, than just learn to enjoy turning on your XP or Vista, or whatever.. double-click on your Media Player icon, and press Play! It’s simply better than fooling around, re-installing OS, etc.

I dont care abt booting to quick play without booting to windows, all i care abt is opening quickplay, listen to music, watch dvds, and use my webcam.

saeed,
1. QuickPlay Direct is all about booting directly into the application (a very very light version of Windows XP is used)

2. If you have Vista installed, I just figured out that:
2a. HP might have taken away the ability to power up your computer and go into QuickPlay, because they cannot set the new Vista BootLoader to choose the QuickPlay partition
2b. Even if they didn’t, and you can power up your computer, the same reason might go. The QuickPlay button will only power up the computer, just like PowerOn

3. If you are not interested in QuickPlay Direct, but only in launching the QuickPlay application, after booting into Windows (XP or Vista)… then you do not need any free space/partition, etc. QuickPlay is only just an application. Are you saying that the QuickPlay button does not run the QuickPlay application? If so.. you might have some issues with the Quick Launch Buttons. Does anything else work (volume up,down, play/pause, next, etc) ?

the problem is that i lost quickplay, nd each time i install quick play it installs dvd play only,, without ny other thing.

The only reason Quick Play Direct interests me is the battery factor. It uses a very stripped down version of Windows, (like BartPE) and can play DVD’s. I was told that booting into Windows XP fully, loading the locally installed QuickPlay application and playing a DVD will give you less battery life than booting off Quick Play Direct (via the Quickplay button) and playing a DVD. On a long plane trip, the longer my battery life the happier I’ll be.

I’m one of the lucky ones that burned my c:\swsetup\ directory just before deleting it. At the time I had thought that all the directories in there was just drivers and basic programs which I would simply just download newer versions online later, but I backed it up just in case. Found out later that the HPQPDP couldn’t be downloaded. Glad I saved it. Not sure if it’s version 2.0 or 2.3 or whatnot, it’s whatever came w/ the laptop and it simply works.

Is there a DirectPlay 3.0? What I’ve seen of 3.0, it only runs on Vista (and I hate Vista) but then other forums say Quickplay Direct will no longer be part of Vista-installed laptops.

Hi….

I want quickplay cd-image. Please anybody can upload it to the file hosting-websites.
I have HP pavilion dv4280ea laptop.

I have an HP Pavilion dv8233cl (w/XP Media Center 2005, 2 100GB drives, intel duo 2GHz processor, 2GB RAM, etc)… and I was just considering wiping the recovery partition (so I could make C: larger - I burned the HP recovery CDs when I got it at Costco about a year ago, and also have Ghost images of C: as well as the 2nd HDD where I have all data)… AND I was wondering what the heck the 1GB “unknown partition” with no drive letter was for and thinking about wiping it too. (by the way, FYI, my recovery partiton is FAT32, and the unkown partition shows as NTFS in the MMC.

I had no idea it was for the QuickPlay (I have v2, but don’t know if it is QP or QP direct or if they’re the same thing cause I never use it. BUT ANYWAY folks, I’m glad I happened upon this thread because now I know a bit of what the hidden partition is for (feel kinda dumb, though).

I realize this may be off-topic, but one question I have is, if I did remove the 12GB recovery partition and make my C: partiton 12GB larger and restore my C: Ghost image backup… will I have any problems, do ya’ll think? (I don’t think I’ll mess with removing the hidden QP partition ;)

TIA, JB

@jbmockus - if you do have the recovery CDs (are you sure you burned CDs and not DVDs??? you must have like 11 CDs or more) or even the Ghost ones then it’s ok to delete the recovery partition.
One thing that you should also backup is the SWSETUP directory in C:

I can not find the HPQPDP File ANYWHERE! I legitimately have looked all day. Any advice or help would be amazing.

Thank you so much, Andrie. I managed to finally get QuickPlay back on my HD on my own terms - following your instructions.

Great tutorial!

Maurits

Great work, Maurits! ;)

I got almost all the way through the installer and then got this error:

“Master Boot Record Strings too long!

Your strings are 60 Bytes but the Master Boot Record has only 29 Bytes for strings”

Any ideas?

I could not find any place from where i can download qp, and reinstall it. I am still searching the web.

i’m sorry to say that asifism.com was the only website that offered quickplay as download. i didn’t search lately for anything else, so you will need to do it.

remember that you should always try to talk with HP, so that maybe there are ways to get an update for quickplay on your laptop.

and don’t forget that you can very well live without quickplay - i very much do!

hi. is it normal that quickplay direct 2.3 takes forever to install once i reboot?

once you reboot?!… what do you mean? the installation should end before rebooting - i think

Folks, why the big fuss over hp quick play . Its garbage anyway. I uninstalled mine. There are much better dvd players out there like fantasy platinum, and webcam software like surveyor which have so many more features and are so much more advanced quick play is just a throw in from hp………

thumbs up, yellahorse!

i have a Hp Pavillion dv6315ca, i choose to upgrade my system but then its done when i realized that all of the applications can be erase in the process, and thats whats bugging me….. my quickplay is a history and i cant use the built-in webcam, can someone please provide with a link for the quickplay that is compatible with my home premium vista, i downloaded quickplay 3.0 but it freezes everyime it gets to 71%,,, what took it so long? hope i got an answer nefore the week ends thank you

you are amazing, thanks a billion!!!

I have a HP Pavilion dv1000….It originally came with quickplay installed, but, I reformatted the hard-drive, and didn’t even think about the quickplay, or recovery partition…. so, no recovery disks, which supposedly were able to restore the quickplay partition? The only thing I really liked about quickplay, was the ability to press one button, and have a dvd ready in seconds…. I assumed that I would be able to download or order a replacement disk…..no such luck. I’ve had horrible experiences with hp tech support, that’s why I went and reformatted the drive…. anyways, I’ve read through some of the posts here, and quite frankly, I’m even more befuddled…. :/ does anyone know where I can find an image of the disk that I’m supposed to have? and instructions on how to restore the partition? Or better yet, something else that mimics the functionality of the instant-on part of quickplay? Also, is having the quickplay partition compatible with dual-booting xp, and linux? Ideally, I’d like to have it setup, where I could load grub, and choose between xp, linux, or quickplay (or its alternative). Would it be possible to have it setup this way? (I checked out GeeXbox, but unfortunately, the download link seems to have been borked =(

Sorry for the mass of questions I vomitted on the page, but I look forward to a response. Thanks!
=]

@farfromhere - Let’s start with something that will knock your wishes down. QuickPlay doesn’t work with GRUB, nor with the Vista Loader.
QuickPlay is basically installed on Windows XP’s boot list. If you use something else, then it simply just starts the normal booting sequence.

I’m sorry to hear that GeeXBOX is down. That is so far my only good alternative.

Regarding downloading QuickPlay, etc… can’t help there.

ok, thank you for your response. Apparently, last night, when I checked GeeXboX, The download link was being updated, because I tried it again today, and it worked. Thanks for the recommendation, I’m pretty satisfied with it. One thing I have noticed, on hp’s support page, there is a download option for the quickplay linux source code…..I’m wondering if that can be compiled into something useful….. bah I’m too lazy and not very familiar with that kind of thing. Besides, now that I have GeeXbox, who needs quickplay? Thanks a lot for your help. ^_^

Help me please, i need quickplay software for Hp Pavilion dv 2025nr laptop, quickplay for XP

Thank’s

hey, im trying to reinstall quickplay, but i cant find the quickplay direct files, would you be able to send them to me or to upload them somewhere? i just need the hpqpdp folder.

thanks

Timileyin, try here ;)

Thx man 4 the topic. But my problem still remains.
I have Pavilion DV2100 which came with QPD. Now the HDD was crashed and I have to replace with new one. I already downloaded HPQPDP from torrent. Partitioning new HDD into 02 primary: 1st (C :) for XP, 2nd (1028MB, hiden lettered X:, unformated) for QPD. However, when I run QPD setup, it post an error message “Quick Playcan only be Installed in QuickPlay-enabled mechine.”
Anyone can help me.

Hello. I am having the same problem stating that QuickPlay can only be installed on a QuickPlay enabled machine. I am just wondering for those of us that have an HP computer with quickplay buttons, if this not an enabled machine, what is? this makes no sense at all. (this i have tried on Vista) I have yet to try on XP, but from what I heard, it may not be able to be done.

I have noticed though when I downgraded to xp MCE 2005, there are ! and ? in device manager: Non Plug and Play Drivers: !Serial and in ?Other Devices, ? Keyboard_Filter_01

this i find very puzzling, because even after I installed the HP softpaq for quick launch buttons, still have the ! and ? in device manager.

Anyone with ideas? I have been trying to work this out for a while.

If anyone has any ideas/solutions please let me know. thanks for your time and this great forum.

Ok, I did a clean install of windows XP MCE 2005 and installed all the drivers. I installed the QLB from vista’s SwSetup and I believe that I solved one problem, the ?Keyboard_Filter_01 (In ?Other Devices). That is no longer showing. I still have !Serial (Under Non Plug and Play Drivers).

When I tried to install HPQPDP, I get a message that states: “QuickPlay can only be Installed in QuickPlay-enabled mechine”. so, I am not sure where to go from here.

Not sure what to think about the !Serial problem, as I cannot start it because it states that there is no device associated with it.

Guess I will keep plugging along. I was provided by someone HP Quickplay dvd, but that is the only thing it does is DVD’s. Not the normal Quickplay program with the other choices like tv, music, webcam, etc. maybe there is a solution someplace, but seeing as HP does not want to help, I guess we are left to our own devices.

Thanks again for any help that may be provided.

I have installed everything QP 2.3, installed HPQPDP and restarted. my system is not getting booted done the steps, nothing happened. pls help!
