logo.jpgDon’t you think that it is nice to use a multi-protocol messenger (Pidgin) but stick to the protocol’s emoticons/smileys?

I mean, this way you communicate on the same level, while sharing the same visual content. Otherwise, you might type : )) because you use a Yahoo pack, and you say “LOL”.. while the other one, who is on MSN/Live.. sees :) ) . Your choice!

For some time now I’ve been using a all-in-one pack for ICQ, Yahoo, MSN/Live, Aim and Gtalk from BlueScreenKid. But why not enhance it, rather than just fix it? The pack had a couple of typos, but since July, he didn’t make any updates to it. It also didn’t have the latest ICQ6 smileys.. and it didn’t have Gadu-Gadu. And we all know how much we love Gadu-Gadu..

So, this afternoon, I give you the pleasure to use Pidgin with original smileys/emoticons for 6 protocols: ICQ, AIM, Yahoo, MSN/Live, GTalk, Gadu-Gadu. (Later updated with Skype, Sametime, MySpaceIM)

Download it here and then copy the archive’s contents to Documents and Settings{User}Application Data.purplesmileys and then choose the pack from Tools - Preferences - Smiley Themes.

You can also convert the ZIP to TAR.GZ (TGZ) and drag and drop it in the Smiley Themes dialog.
[Note] the theme file is now UTF8 because of the Polish charset. If you have problems just rename theme_ansi into theme

Hey…

I just downloaded the pack — installation went fine.

However, I noticed some of the emoticons don’t look as sharp (are a bit pixelated) as they could be? Are they being compressed differently ?

Hey, I am new to this. After installing it, I did not see the finger crossed icon (msn-fingercrossed.gif) when typing (yn) in pidgin. Am I supposed to see that? Or did I miss something?

@alvin664 - you are right. there is a typo. you can quicklyfix by just renaming msn-fingerscrossed.gif to msn-fingercrossed.gif

Love your theme pack (although had to combine old version with 0.5.3 to get all the AIM icons to work).

Question - my wife uses Trillian (I know, boo hiss! But I haven’t talked her out of it as yet), and complains because I don’t receiver her “girl monkey” emoticon from the Trillian set. Key sequence is apparently:

some of my contacts have yahoo messenger 8 and complain, that lots of my smilies are not correct. the problem: lots of your smilies have missing noses, for exemple :-/ works, :/ doesnt, your theme renders both, but when i select the smily from your menu, it sends :/, which does work in pidgin but apparently not in yahoo messenger.
same with :w vs :-w
b) vs b-)
:s vs :-s
#:s vs #:-s
and then almost the entire third line…
it is nice that your theme abviously makes pidgin also render non standard forms of these smilies, but it should use the original ones for sending.

and sorry for posting again, i forgot another suggestion: your logo kind of makes the smily themes table in pidgin ugly. because it is too big. i trimmed it in photoshop, then reduced the resolution to 50%x50%, it is still very clearly recognizable, but the table looks more normal again (probably 45% would make it perfect, didnt have the nerve to try more). this is under windows, i dont know how pidgin look under linux.
it would be nice of you to include these changes in your next release so i would have to do them over and over again when upgrading. ;-)

Great smileys. However with 0.6.1 I there seams to be a bug. When I unzip the smileys and copy them over to the correct folder there is no option for them in the Smileys option in Pidgin. The previous pack works no problem.

You could always make a tar.gz archive then put it in a zip so it’d upload here (wow, talk about overkill, .tar.gz.zip :P ) …and transparency would be really nice. I actually did that once, but then my installation whacked out and I lost them (so much for my work… *sniff*). The non animated one’s can be .pngs and the animated ones go to gif (png offers “true” transparency, whereas gif does not as well as pngs are compressed, but png does not support animation… well, I think it does as of just recently but it’s hard to implement cus it’s new to the format…). Anywho, nice pack :D
